البربوط سمك من شعبة جودي فورم (gadiform) (تشبه سمك القد) المياه العذبة (freshwater). كما يعرف أيضًا باسم ماريا والمحامي وبوت الإنكليس (eelpout) (على نحو مضلل)، وتعتبر سمكة البربوط قريبة من اللنغ الشائع (common ling) والكوسك (cusk) البحري. كما يعتبر العضو الوحيد من فصيلة لوتا (Lota).
