Understand The city is within the metropolitan area of Madrid, with an importan character of a commuter town, since it evolved from being a village in the last third of the 20th century of barely 4,000 inhabitants to one of the largest urban concentrations in the region. It has been gradually loosing its commuter town role thanks to the establishment of institutions such as the Rey Juan Carlos University, the IMDEA Energy research centre and the Dos de Mayo Art Centre (CA2M).
