Birmania o Myanmar, cuya denominación oficial es República de la Unión de Myanmar, es un Estado soberano del Sudeste Asiático. Limita con India y Bangladés al oeste, Tailandia y Laos al este, China al norte y noreste, y con la bahía de Bengala y el mar de Andamán al sur. Tiene 676 578 km² y una población de casi 60 millones de habitantes. Su ciudad más poblada es Rangún, la ex capital que fue mudada desde 2005 a Naipyidó. Los primeros indicios de una sociedad compleja en territorio birmano corresponden a la civilización pyu en el siglo II a. C., aunque el primer Estado unificado, el Reino de Pagan, no surgió hasta el año 849. Tras independizarse del Reino Unido en 1948, el país atravesó un período de inestabilidad que desembocó en el golpe de Estado del general Ne Win en 1962, marcando el inicio de décadas de gobierno militar.…
